Goddard Park Beach
Goddard Park beach is a free, non-surf saltwater beach inside Goddard Memorial State Park in Warwick, a park that sits on Greenwich Cove and Greenwich Bay. RI DEM charges nothing to use it — there are no fees to access beaches within state parks — and lifeguards are on duty in season from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. as staffing allows. Dogs are not allowed on the beach from April 1 to September 30.
The Beach at a Glance
What Kind of Beach It Is
DEM posts a "Non-Surf Beach Notice" for Goddard, its term for a beach on bay water rather than open ocean surf. Swimming is one of the park's listed experiences, and DEM's park history says salt-water swimming was one of the things Goddard added to the state's park system when the estate was given in 1927. The City of Warwick's description of the park lists a saltwater beach, a bathhouse and concession stands, and includes windsurfing among the park's activities.
Lifeguards and the Swim Season
DEM says lifeguards are on duty seasonally from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., as staffing allows. State rules set the bathing season from the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend until 6 p.m. on Labor Day, unless the parks division announces otherwise. Outside those hours and dates, DEM is clear that swimmers are responsible for their own safety, and state rules require a "No Lifeguard on Duty – Swim at your own Risk" sign wherever a bathing area is open without a guard.
DEM's advice on the beach notice is worth repeating: learn to swim, respect the water, know your limits, and supervise children closely. Citing the American Academy of Pediatrics, DEM says children and teenagers should always be supervised while swimming.
Water Quality and Beach Closures
Some summer days the beach is closed to swimming even when the sun is out. The Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH) tests the water at licensed beaches during the summer and recommends closing a swimming area when bacteria counts are too high. A closure means the water is not safe for swimming or other activities in the water; the beach itself, and the rest of the park, stay open.
How to check before you go:
- RIDOH's Beach Viewer map, linked from health.ri.gov/beaches, shows the current status of every licensed beach.
- RIDOH's beaches phone line, 401-222-2751, carries a recorded message with the latest closures.
- RIDOH and DEM announce reopenings too; in July 2023, for example, RIDOH recommended reopening Goddard's beach once bacteria counts returned to safe levels.
Beach Rules
State park rules that apply at Goddard's swimming area:
- Swim only in the designated area and only during posted or permitted times.
- No ball playing, frisbees, kite flying, snorkels, face masks or scuba gear inside the swim area.
- No flotation devices in the swim area except Coast Guard–approved life jackets.
- No swimming during thunderstorms or when conditions are unsafe.
- No animals on the beach from April 1 to September 30, except service animals.
- No alcohol anywhere in the park.
- Carry out your trash; the City of Warwick's page on the park says all trash is carry in, carry out.
Facilities
DEM lists restroom facilities and a seasonal lifeguard at Goddard, and the City of Warwick lists a bathhouse and concession stands, with the bathhouse's seasonal number as (401) 884-9620. Picnic tables are spread across the park; from April 1 to October 31 they need a permit, so a beach day with a picnic is easiest with a same-day site in the Oak or Maple grove (see picnic areas).

Parking for the Beach
Parking is free; there is no beach lot fee at Goddard as there is at Rhode Island's state beaches. The park opens at sunrise and closes at sunset. See parking and directions.
Other Beaches Nearby
If Goddard is closed for water quality, other Warwick beaches may be open — check RIDOH's map for each. Oakland Beach and Warwick City Park's Buttonwoods beach are run by the City of Warwick, which charges for parking in beach season. The Warwick beaches guide compares them.
Good For / Maybe Skip If
Good for: families with young children who want calm bay water, a free day at the beach, and a picnic under big trees after a swim.
Maybe skip if: you want ocean waves — Goddard is a non-surf beach on the bay. Also skip the beach with a dog between April and September; walk the trails instead.
