Conimicut Lighthouse
Conimicut Light is a white, cast-iron lighthouse with a black lantern standing on a shoal in Narragansett Bay off the Conimicut section of Warwick, where the bay meets Providence Harbor. The U.S. Coast Guard lists the station as established in 1868 and the present tower as first lit in 1883; it was automated in 1966 and is still an operating aid to navigation. The best land view is from the City of Warwick's Conimicut Point Park on Point Avenue.
Conimicut Light at a Glance
What the Coast Guard Records
The Coast Guard's historian's office lists the light as Conimicut Shoal Light, at the Providence Harbor end of Narragansett Bay:
- Station established: 1868, with a fourth-order Fresnel lens as its original lens.
- Current tower first lit: 1883.
- Foundation: a cast-iron and granite caisson.
- Tower: cast iron, conical, painted white with a black lantern.
- Automated: 1966.
- Operational: yes.
Where to See It
You cannot walk to the lighthouse; it stands in the water on its own foundation. The City of Warwick's Conimicut Point Park, on Point Avenue, is the shore-side viewpoint: the city describes it as a park with scenic views and a peaceful setting. Warwick's parks are open dawn to dusk unless posted otherwise. Bring binoculars or a long lens for a close look at the lantern.
Conimicut is also home to Clegg Field, a lighted softball field on Winter Avenue that the city lists with seating for about 2,000.

Photographing the Lighthouse
The tower stands offshore, so a telephoto lens or binoculars make the difference. Plan around the park's hours: Warwick's parks close at dusk unless posted otherwise.
Combining It With Goddard Park
Goddard Memorial State Park is in the Potowomut section of Warwick, a drive from Conimicut. Pair a lighthouse stop with other Warwick places: Pawtuxet Village, Rocky Point State Park on Warwick Neck, Oakland Beach and Warwick City Park. The things to do in Warwick guide puts them in one list.
