Dogs at Goddard Park
Yes, dogs are allowed at Goddard Memorial State Park — RI DEM lists it as pet-friendly — but they must be on a leash no longer than six feet and under control at all times. Dogs are not allowed on Goddard's beach from April 1 to September 30, and never in the designated swimming area. Owners must clean up after them.
Dog Rules at a Glance
The Leash Rule
Rhode Island's state park rules say domestic animals must be on a leash of not more than six feet and under the control of a handler at all times. The handler is responsible for the animal, including feeding, toileting and cleaning up after it. Retractable leads that run out past six feet do not meet the rule.
The Beach Ban, April 1 to September 30
State rules say no one may bring any animal onto any state bathing beach from April 1 through September 30, except service animals. Goddard's beach is a lifeguarded state park beach, so the ban applies there. The City of Warwick's page on the park repeats the same rule. RIDOH's beach page says the same thing more simply: state beaches do not allow dogs during the on-season, April 1 to September 30.
Separately, state rules ban animals (other than service animals) from inside a designated swim area at any time. Outside the bathing season, keep your dog out of the roped or posted swim zone.
Where to Walk a Dog at Goddard
- The bridle trails. DEM gives the park 18 miles of bridle trails. Keep your dog close and give horses room; see the trails page.
- The park road and lawns. The loop around the golf course passes the picnic fields and the Oak and Maple groves (see the park map).
- Off-season shoreline. From October 1 to March 31 the beach ban does not apply, but the leash rule does.
Keep dogs off the golf course, out of other people's reserved picnic sites, and away from horses.

Cleaning Up
Bring bags. The handler must clean up after the animal under state rules, and the City of Warwick's page on Goddard says all trash is carry in, carry out, so take it home if you cannot find a bin. RIDOH points out that pet waste can pollute beaches and cause illness.
Service Animals
The beach and swim-area bans both make an exception for service animals as defined in Rhode Island law (R.I. Gen. Laws § 40-9.1-2).
Other Warwick Parks With Dogs
Rules at the City of Warwick's beaches and parks are set by the city, not the state; RIDOH notes that town beach rules vary and are generally posted at the beach. Check the signs at Oakland Beach and Warwick City Park before you go. Rocky Point State Park is listed by DEM as pet-friendly, with the same leash rule as Goddard.
Good For / Maybe Skip If
Good for: long leashed walks on woodland trails, and off-season beach walks from October to March.
Maybe skip if: you want a summer beach day with your dog — Goddard's beach is closed to animals from April 1 to September 30.
